CES 2022

#3: Applications and Use Cases for Digital Healthcare and Wearables

This final CES healthcare briefing note from Rockley Photonics considers some of the use cases for wearables that can reliably and accurately detect multiple biomarkers for health and well-being.

If you missed the earlier briefing notes on market trends and technology trends, read them here and here.

Tracking multiple biomarkers enables a holistic approach to health and wellness

  • Photonics-based sensors reach multiple layers of the dermis, probing the skin and interstitial fluid within the dermis, non-invasively.
  • Deep sensing can measure a wider range of biochemical components and materials and produce more accurate readings.
  • The range of physiological measurements includes heart rate (HR and HRV), core body temperature, hydration, blood pressure, blood oxygen, alcohol, lactate, and glucose indicators.
  • Combining photonics-based sensors with cloud-based data analytics and AI will enable a holistic approach to understanding the interplay of key biomarkers and assessing general health.
  • Core body temperature, or CBT, is an example of a critical biomarker where photonics-based sensors improve measurement performance, providing more accurate results than other temperature instruments that typically measure skin surface temperature rather than core temperature.
  • Measuring CBT is an important indicator of various health conditions, including thermoregulation, infections, occupational health, ovulation.
  • Continuous monitoring of CBT has the potential to transform remote patient monitoring.
  • Measuring CBT as one of several biomarkers and analyzing their interplay can help develop a holistic understanding of general health and wellness.
  • The figure below shows the potential interplay of biomarkers and their relevance to disease detection.

“By developing technology to perform ‘clinic-on-the-wrist’ monitoring of multiple biomarkers we are embarking on a new voyage of discovery in healthcare and wellness. Analyzing the interplay of continuously-monitored multiple biomarkers, using AI techniques, will enable a holistic approach to healthcare and deliver on our vision of giving people better insights into their health and well-being.”
