Living in Pasadena
Nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in northern Los Angeles County, Pasadena has something to offer everyone. Outdoor adventures, a lively sports and cultural environment, premier academic and scientific institutions, fine dining and shopping are part of what makes this town a very special place to live.
Pasadena, Calif. was founded in 1874 and became an incorporated city in Los Angeles County in 1886. Pasadena was one of the hubs of the Pacific Electric Railroad and during the early 20th century was the eighth-largest city in California. Pasadena is well known for its efforts to both preserve, yet update, its historic centers of commerce and urban residential developments and has therefore become a somewhat chic and trendy place to live and work.
Pasadena has two main urban centers, Old Town Pasadena and the South Lake Business District. Old Town is the historical commercial center of Pasadena today and is known as the city’s hotspot for retail clothing stores and upscale restaurants.
The sub-tropical and semi-arid climate of the region maintains an overall average temperature of 62 °F (17 °C), ideal for taking advantage of a variety of outdoor sporting activities, including surfing the Southern California coastline or even skiing at Big Bear ski resort less than a two hour drive away.
The Tournament of Roses annual parade of flower-covered floats has been held in Pasadena since January 1, 1890. It was patterned after a European festival of roses and was meant to show off Pasadena’s natural beauty and sunny climate while most of the nation lay buried beneath snow. Today, the 5.5 mile (8.8 kilometers) Tournament of Roses parade has magnificent floral floats, marching bands, and equestrian units.
Pasadena has a vibrant arts scene, with many famous actors performing at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Japanese Gardens or Pasadena Playhouse. In addition, there are world-famous museums including the Norton Simon Museum, which features one of the world’s largest private collections of European and Asian art.
